Open Position: Controller

Fellow is looking for a Controller. As the first finance/accounting hire, you will report directly to the Vice President of Sales and Operations. You will be responsible for all aspects of finance and accounting, including accounting (payroll, A/R, A/P, month-end close), financial planning and budgeting, financial and capital strategy, financial infrastructure, and business analytics. This role will manage our external accounting and finance consultants, and has the potential to lead an internal team as the company scales. Specific responsibilities include:

Directing all aspects of accounting operations: From developing and maintaining necessary accounting policies and controls to overseeing transactions related to the general ledger, receivables, payables, payroll and financial reporting, you manage accounting. Monthly, quarterly, and annual closes will be your domain. As needed, created detailed reports for internal and external partners. This is a hands on part of the role, although we do have external resources to support accounting activities (e.g, closes).

Financial planning and budgeting: Conduct annual planning process for Fellow over all and individual functions. Support quarterly reviews / re-forecasts (or as needed).

Shape company strategy: Work closely with the executive leadership team on an ongoing basis to evolve our overall strategy and evaluate risks and strategic scenarios, providing knowledge of financial drivers, risks, sensitivities, trade-offs and opportunities.

Cash flow management: Develop capital strategy in conjunction with executive leadership team and external CFO. Manage cash position and relationship with external financing.

Oversee audit and tax activities: Manage monthly, quarterly and annual filings at the state, federal and global level. Ensure Fellow is compliant with all applicable tax policies and oversee registration as needed. If needed oversee audit activities (not currently part of fellows)

Financial HR management: Manage payroll and variable compensation payouts, administrate the 401K and audit process, and oversee stock administration as it relates to employee options.

Execute weekly and ad hoc reporting and analysis aid decision making: From the weekly company presentation to reporting on various functions and ad hoc analyses, you’ll help us make decisions based on numbers not instinct. As part of this, you may move us to a better data infrastructure solution.

Evolve finance function as company scales: This may include in-housing some aspects of finance, adding new processes and changing systems.

  • Minimum of 5 – 10 years of related experience
  • Bachelor’s degree in business, finance or accounting; CPA or MBA a plus
  • Experience with:
  • Financial analysis and forecasting, including three statement financial modeling, preparing statistical reports and making recommendations based on analysis and research
  • Corporate finance and other accounting theory, principles and practices to include GAAP, Inventory Accounting, Revenue Recognition, and Stock-Based Compensation
  • Knowledge of and experience with tax processes and compliance
  • Comfort in the startup environment (i.e., sometimes chaotic and lacking structure) and able to create structure and foundational accounting processes
  • Mastery knowledge of Microsoft Office; accounting software including QuickBooks, Expensify and Bill.com
  • (preferred) Experience working with outsourced accounting functions
  • (preferred) Scaling a finance team from inception to $50 million+ in annual revenues or 50+ full-time employees
  • (preferred) Experience implementing and managing an ERP system

We opened our first flagship store in 2017 in San Francisco’s Mission District. We call it the Playground and created it to be a space where customers can brew and test our products, share coffee tips, take a class, or just talk shop. Recently we’ve been making waves with our award-winning product, from our latest Kickstarter launch, the highly anticipated Ode Brew Grinder, to the Stagg EKG, which won the Red Dot Award in April 2018. Our small startup is continually growing and rapidly expanding its portfolio of coffee and tea brewing products.
