Don Oscar is one of Costa Rica’s many exemplary micromills, managed by brothers Horacio and Alejandro Solís and named in honor of their father. One reason the country has emerged as such a coffee powerhouse is the “micromill revolution” of the early 2000s, where individual estates started processing their own cherries rather than sending them to larger processing stations, resulting in dramatically different and high quality coffees. Don Oscar has maintained the same team across decades, and their carefully yellow honey processed Catuaí is a standout.
Equator noted a sweet balanced cup with complex flavors of red apple, orange zest, and pecan pie. We tasted the red apple, along with milk chocolate, persimmon, and hazelnut, a black cherry fragrance and a juicy nectarine acidity.

Every coffee we share has been tasted and recommended by our expert Tasting Panel who have years of experience in specialty coffee. We cast a wide net, trying hundreds of coffees, keeping an open mind to new regions, processes, and roasters, and going through many rounds of cupping. If there was an easier way of choosing each coffee, we wouldn’t want to do it.
